I’m not erudite enough to read many colophons. i’ve seen the idea before and liked it, but only recently have I decided I should steal the idea for my blog. In particular, I ended up convinced based on this post by Matt Webb: https://interconnected.org/home/2024/10/28/colophon
history
This site has existed in various forms since early 2016. I started with a jekyll builder which i later grew to hate, so I moved to a homerolled emacs / orgmode publishing system. This worked “well” and was exceedingly stupid. I later moved to Hugo to get a more robust setup that could be, potentially, published from places that weren’t My Single Own Device.
I publish in fits and spurts when the mood takes me. I struggle to spend the time writing, and when I do write I struggle to convince myself to publish.
publishing stack
- I currently publish with Hugo, writing regular MD files that then generate
.htmlfiles. I no longer write in orgmode for this blog. - The CSS was cribbed HEAVILY from other authors, Ambrevar and jgkamat. I then hand cranked the remaining changes.
blog esoterica
Personal pages are a reflection of the author in a bunch of ways, and are a garden I can till for my own happiness. Here are some things that make me happy:
- There is a misc selection of 8 logos that are abstract line art with an eye highlight. They are randomly chosen on page load. The TOC on each page (for desktop) or the progress bar (on mobile) are colored based on the eye highlight color.
- I read a guy’s blog once who had a great joke, where if you read his blog and then left his site open while you browsed another tab HIS blog tab would change titles to embarrassing things. Now I do that.
- My TOC is shamelessly stolen from a guy on twitter who posted about a TOC navigation with an SVG path. I thought that looked real neat.
- my footer says “move the world beneath your wheels”. this is an indirect quote from a guy on somethingawful about how he taught his daughter to ride a bike. “Think about it this way; you’re spinning the pedals but the bike stays still, you’re moving the WORLD beneath your wheels.”
